Work Completed in the Last Two Weeks

During the past two weeks, significant progress was made on various highway, maintenance, and operational tasks.

Highway Work

  • The team used the grader to push snowbanks back before the weather warmed up. This proactive measure was taken to prevent runoff issues and maintain safe road conditions.
  • Areas were opened up with the loader to facilitate water runoff, ensuring that melting snow would not create additional hazards or water accumulation on the roadways.
  • Continuous monitoring of muddy spots was conducted, focusing on problematic locations. For example, Upper Podunk hill off of Route 100 was smoothed out to improve drivability.
  • Dover Road and Townshend Dam Road are scheduled to be addressed with the grader once temperatures decrease. At that time, stone will also be hauled to the most affected areas when the next batch of cold air arrives.
  • Some stone was hauled to the stockpile in preparation for when the roads firm up. This will allow for short hauling in the early morning hours to minimize disruption and maximize efficiency.

Salt and Sand Inventory

  • The current stock of both salt and sand is projected to be sufficient for the remainder of the season. No shortages are anticipated at this time.

Maintenance

  • The excavator was brought in for inspection. During the check, a few small leaks were identified and the machine was greased. A replacement hose is on order, and once installed, the excavator will be ready for spring work.
  • The transmission fluid level in the grader continues to decrease slowly. The source of the leak has not yet been identified, and further investigation will be necessary.
  • A blown fuse and tripped breaker for the feed gate and tarp on T2 were repaired, restoring full functionality to these components.

Other Activities

  • Replacement work lights for the grader were ordered online. This approach resulted in cost savings compared to purchasing through the dealer or a local parts store.

Plan for the Next Two Weeks

The upcoming two weeks will focus on addressing emerging needs and continuing routine operations.

  • The crew will work on repairing muddy roads as conditions warrant, prioritizing areas with higher amounts of travel.
  • Efforts will continue to manage and respond to any winter weather events, maintaining safe roads for all users.
  • The loader will be used to kick open snowbanks, reducing the risk of ice buildup and further water management issues.
  • Installation of the newly acquired work lights will be completed, improving visibility and safety for nighttime and early morning operations.
