Work Completed in the Last Two Weeks

Highway Work

Over the past two weeks, several important highway maintenance tasks have been carried out. Stone was delivered to muddy areas and distributed using a grader to improve the road surfaces. For sections that were less muddy, the ground was turned over to facilitate drying. Additionally, spring grading has begun on the rougher roads to enhance their condition.

The crew replaced a culvert on Helmock Road that had separated due to frost and experienced erosion underneath. Culvert inlets in south Wardsboro were also repaired to prevent water from flowing underneath. Another culvert on French Hill, which had collapsed in the center, was replaced.

Maintenance

Plows were painted and stored outdoors, except for T1. The frame and body of T3 are currently being needle-scaled and wire-wheeled in preparation for painting. The tow-behind rake was sent to Grayson’s shop for rebuilding, and the front mount rake will be used until the rebuild is complete.

The grader continues to experience fuel mixing with oil. United is working with John Deere to identify the cause, and as a result, more frequent oil changes are being performed to keep the fluid clean and prevent overfilling. The grader recently had a flat tire, which appeared to be caused by an issue with the o-ring on the lock ring. Pete’s Tire replaced the o-ring and valve stem, but the tire was flat again the following day due to a rock cut. The spare tire was put on the grader, and the damaged tire was taken to Pete’s Tire for a plug patch. It is likely that the grader tires will need to be replaced within the next year, as they are nearing the end of their service life.

Other Activities

GMP is preparing to begin work on the Podunk project in approximately three weeks. Adams replaced a culvert that failed due to undermining from underground linework. Several culverts with power lines beneath them are rising, causing water to flow underneath, which will require continued attention.

Plan for the Next Two Weeks

The team plans to start spring road grading to improve road conditions. Ditches will be cleared of leaves and debris to ensure proper drainage. The body and frame of T3 will be painted, and oil changes will be performed on the grader and T4. Additionally, there may be a meeting with WRC regarding MRGP segments for fiscal year 2026.
